Gutter Cleaning in Birmingham: Clear, Fixed and Crossed Off Your List
Gutter Cleaning and Repair in Birmingham: blocked gutters cleared, leaks and loose brackets fixed properly in one visit, with a tidy finish. Call for a quote.

That drip, the overflowing corner or the downpipe you keep meaning to look at is easy to put off. At Thompson’s - Local Handyman Services l Odd Job Man, we sort gutter cleaning in Birmingham and the small repairs that go with it, so the nagging job gets done and you can stop thinking about it. We’re based in Birmingham B6 and also cover Solihull and Sutton Coldfield.
Gutters carry rainwater away from your walls, windows and foundations. When they clog or work loose, water goes where it shouldn’t. Got a few other small jobs waiting? Tell us and we’ll quote the lot together.
Understanding the Job
What actually goes wrong with a gutter? Most problems come down to three things: blockages, leaks and fixings that have let go.
Blockages are leaves, moss, silt and debris that collect in the channel and the downpipe outlets. Water has nowhere to go, so it spills over the front edge and runs down the wall.
Leaks usually happen at joints, where two lengths meet or where a corner or stop end is fitted. Seals age and sections move.
Loose or sagging runs happen when brackets work free or the gutter is weighed down by debris and water. A gutter that no longer slopes towards the downpipe holds water instead of shifting it.
A proper visit looks at all three, because clearing a gutter often shows up the leak or loose bracket that was hiding underneath.
Who This Is For
Not everyone calling us owns the roof over their head, and that’s fine.
- Homeowners who have noticed overflow, damp patches on outside walls, or plants growing from the gutter.
- Renters who want to report a problem and need to know what to ask their landlord for.
- Landlords who need gutters checked and repaired between tenancies, with a tidy job that is easy to arrange around a void period. We visit on weekday evenings until 9pm, so you don’t have to be there during the day.
- Anyone with a list of small jobs, where gutters are just one item.
Gutter and Downpipe Cleaning
Clearing out a gutter is the core of the work: we remove everything that has built up in the channels and make sure water can flow freely down and away.
We clear the debris from the runs, check the outlets and flush through to see that the downpipes are running. If water is backing up or trickling slowly, we’ll tell you where the blockage is rather than guess. Loose debris and waste are bagged and taken away, so the garden or driveway is left tidy.
Cleaning is also the best time to inspect. With the channel empty you can see sagging sections, cracked joints and missing fixings, and we point them out so you can decide what to do next.
If your gutters overflow in heavy rain, your downpipes have gone quiet, or you can’t remember the last time they were cleared, this is the job for you. The benefit is straightforward: water goes down the pipe rather than down your walls, and small faults get spotted before they turn into bigger repair bills. It all comes down to catching problems while they’re still cheap to fix.
If a downpipe is blocked deeper in, at the underground drain connection, that’s a drainage job rather than a gutter one. We’ll say so, and explain who to call.
Leaking Joints and Loose Brackets
Is your gutter dripping from a joint, sagging between fixings or pulling away from the fascia board? Then read on.
Leaking joints can often be resealed or the section refitted so the water stays in the channel. Loose brackets are refixed, or replaced where the old ones have failed, and the run is realigned so it slopes towards the downpipe. A gutter that sits level or tilts the wrong way will hold water and keep overflowing, however clean it is.
Where a section is cracked or has split beyond sensible repair, we’ll explain the options, which may include replacing that length or fitting. We won’t suggest replacing the whole system if a section will do.
Landlords dealing with a repair between tenants, owners with a persistent drip, and anyone who has had a gutter knocked or pulled loose all get the same result. You end up with a secure, level fixing that carries water properly, with less staining on the wall below and less risk of damp.
If the fascia or soffit behind the gutter is rotten, the fixings may have nothing sound to hold on to. We’ll tell you plainly if that’s the case.
When It Needs a Roofer Instead
Some problems that show up at the gutter line start much higher up. We’re a handyman service, and we’ll say so when a job needs a roofer.
You should call a roofer if you have:
- Slipped, cracked or missing roof tiles or slates
- Leaks coming through the ceiling or roof space
- Damaged flashing, valleys or chimney work
- Rotten or collapsed fascia and soffit boards across a large area
- Gutters on a high or awkward roof where safe access needs scaffolding
We’ll tell you what we’ve seen and why we think it needs a specialist, so you can explain it clearly when you call one. No pressure, no scare story. If we can still do the gutter side of things, such as clearing or refixing once the roofer has finished, we’re happy to come back for that when the time comes.
You aren’t paying for a repair that won’t hold because the real fault is elsewhere.
Step by Step
- You call and describe the problem. Tell us what you can see, where it is and what else is on your list.
- We arrange a visit. We work Monday to Friday, 9am to 9pm, so evening visits are possible.
- We look at the job. We check the gutters, downpipes and fixings from a safe position and talk through what we find.
- You get a quote. We explain what is needed and what it will cost, before any work starts.
- We do the work. Gutters are cleared, leaks and brackets are dealt with, and other small jobs can be done on the same visit.
- We tidy up. Debris is removed, and we show you what has been done.
What You’ll Gain
- Fewer visits. Gutter work and other small jobs can be dealt with together.
- A secure, level fixing. Gutters that slope correctly and stay put.
- A tidy finish. Debris is taken away rather than left on your path.
- A straight opinion. If something needs a roofer or another specialist, we’ll say so.
- Flexible timing. Evening visits until 9pm, Monday to Friday, suit people who work days.
How Much Is Gutter Cleaning, and How Long Does It Take?
No two properties are the same, so we don’t give a flat figure here. The cost is set by the length of the gutter runs, the number of downpipes, how much has built up, how easy the gutters are to reach, and whether repairs are needed as well as cleaning.
A short run with easy access is a quicker job than a long run with heavy build-up. Repairs add time, and so do awkward heights.
When you call, we’ll ask about the property, the problem and any other jobs. We then visit to look at the work and give you a quote you can accept or decline. If you’ve got a list, such as gutters, a fence panel and flat pack assembly, we’ll price it all together.
Other Jobs While We’re There
Why make two appointments when one will do? If you have other small jobs, we can often take them on during the same visit. That might include flat pack assembly, TV mounting, minor repairs around the house or garden, and fence repairs. Ask when you call and we’ll tell you honestly whether we can do it.
Jobs We Don’t Take On
Some work sits outside what we do. We don’t do electrical work, gas work, plumbing repairs, locksmith work or rubbish removal. Instead, call:
- A qualified electrician for wiring, sockets and lighting circuits
- A Gas Safe registered engineer for boilers, gas appliances and pipework
- A plumber for leaks, taps, pipes and drainage
- A locksmith for lock-outs and security locks
- A licensed waste carrier for rubbish and clearance
Roof repairs also go to a roofer, as set out above.

Frequently Asked Questions
Every house is different, so the price depends on the length of the gutters, the number of downpipes, how much debris has built up, and how easy they are to reach. We don't publish fixed prices. Call us with the details and we'll give you a clear quote, with any repairs priced separately.
Yes. Give us your list when you call and we'll quote the jobs together, then do as many as we can in one visit. That could be gutters, a fence panel and some flat pack assembly. If any job needs a specialist, we'll tell you at the outset.
Electrical work, gas work, plumbing repairs, locksmith work and rubbish removal are all off our list. Roof repairs go to a roofer. If you're unsure whether a job fits, ask us. We'll tell you plainly and point you towards the right kind of tradesperson.
In general, the landlord is responsible for the outside of the property, which includes gutters and downpipes, but your tenancy agreement sets out the details. Tenants should report problems in writing. Landlords can call us to arrange cleaning or repairs between tenancies, including evenings until 9pm.
It depends on who owns and uses that section. Check your property deeds, and talk to your neighbour first, as agreeing a shared repair is often simplest. We can look at the problem and explain what is needed, which gives you something concrete to discuss.
